Relief services  are part of the benefits catalog of the statutory long-term care insurance and are legally regulated in § 45b SGB XI.

  • They serve to relieve the burden on family caregivers.
  • They provide additional professional support in caregiving.
  • They promote the independence and self-determination of those in need of care.

Requirements for the claim:

  • Insurance in the statutory long-term care insurance scheme with at least two years of insurance coverage in the last ten years (§ 33 para. 2 SGB XI).
  • A recognized care level must be present.

  • Household help and household-related services  such as:
    • Shopping assistance
    • Cleaning of house or apartment
    • to make the laundry
    • Food preparation
    • Transportation services
    • errands
  • Everyday life or care support
  • Offers for activities, activation, and memory promotion , e.g., for dementia patients
  • Accompanied mobilization
  • Respite care
  • Short-term care
  • Day or night care
  • Visiting services

A notice:

  • Many of these services are considered low-threshold support services according to § 45c SGB XI.
  • They may also be provided by trained staff or volunteers without nursing training.

The relief amount is a uniform 125 euros per month for all care levels:

  • Care level 1: 125 euros/month
  • Care level 2: 125 euros/month
  • Care level 3: 125 euros/month
  • Care level 4: 125 euros/month
  • Care level 5: 125 euros/month

Additional relief regarding in-kind care benefits:

  • Those requiring care from care level 2 upwards can use up to 40% of the unused budget for further relief services.

  • Claim via the long-term care insurance fund.
  • Billing is done on a  cost reimbursement basis  (invoices and proof of payment required).
  • For care services, billing is usually done directly with the long-term care insurance fund.

Transfer of unused amounts:

  • Carryover to the following month and year is possible.
  • Expiry no later than June 30th of the following year if not claimed.
