Home and inpatient care

Types of care can initially be broadly distinguished according to where the care services are provided – at home or in a care facility:

Home care

Home care, also known as outpatient care, is usually provided by family members or professional caregivers. In the latter case, qualified professionals (such as those from an outpatient care service) regularly visit the person needing care at home to provide the necessary services. The specific services provided and the number of hours of care depend on the individual’s needs and their care level.

Inpatient care

Not everyone can imagine or manage caring for family members in need of care in their own home. In such cases, residential care offers various options. Residential care facilities specialize in the care of people requiring assistance and provide either full-time or part-time care. A nursing home or assisted living facility is therefore considered a full-time residential care facility. Part-time care takes place, for example, in day care centers, where those requiring care spend the day. There, they receive care and can participate in a range of recreational activities tailored to their needs before returning home in the afternoon.

Examples of inpatient care facilities:

Examples of inpatient

care facilities:

  • Retirement homes:  Unlike a nursing home, a retirement home, a senior residence or a retirement home, a nursing home or also in “assisted living” provides good accommodation for people in need of care and seniors who do not (yet) have an acute need for care.
  • Nursing home:  If there is an acute need for care and the person is classified into a care level, the basic admission criterion for a care facility for people in need of care and senior citizens is already met.
  • Day care facilities for seniors:  In such facilities, people in need of care and seniors meet during the day and are reliably cared for.

Multigenerational houses as places of encounter

Multi-generational housing projects are also gaining popularity: as meeting places where different generations can come together, do things together, help and support each other, they have become an integral part of some neighborhoods. In a large community, everyone can contribute their skills and talents; no one has to feel lonely, but rather is well cared for within the community.

Overview of care options

Depending on the level of care required and individual circumstances, a specific type of care is necessary for the person in need of care. For all types of care, the following applies: Depending on the level of care required, you are entitled to a certain amount of care allowance from the long-term care insurance fund. Here, however, you will first find an overview of the most important types of care:

Short-term care

This type of care is used when someone needs short-term care. For example, this need arises when someone is not yet able to manage alone at home after a hospital stay and requires assistance. Short-term care is often provided in a residential setting. However, at PflegePlus, we also offer outpatient short-term care.

Advantages of short-term care:

Advantages of

short-term care:

  • reliable support and care
  • Home care is possible through outpatient care services.

Disadvantages of short-term care:

Disadvantages of

short-term care:

  • Often long waiting times at inpatient short-term care facilities
  • This is a temporary solution, therefore a readjustment is necessary when returning to normal daily life.

Day care

In day care, relatives know their loved ones in need of care are well looked after during the day, while they themselves can go about their daily lives as usual.

Advantages of day care:

Advantages

of day care:

  • reliable support in the form of care and nursing for several hours a day
  • Especially for working people or those caring for relatives with children, this is a good solution to get some relief.
  • Outpatient treatment possible

Disadvantages of day care:

Disadvantages

of day care:

  • Often scarce places in day care facilities for people in need of care and senior citizens
  • Some people in need of care and seniors prefer to spend time with their own family and feel uncomfortable when they have to spend their free time with other people.

Night care

In night care, trained caregivers take over the care and support of those in need of care during the night, primarily to relieve the burden on family caregivers.

Benefits of nighttime skincare:

Benefits of nighttime

skincare:

  • provides important rest and relaxation for caregivers at night
  • can be provided on an outpatient basis

Disadvantages of nighttime skincare:

Disadvantages of

nighttime skincare:

  • May not be available every night

24-hour care

24-hour care is aimed at people in need of care who require round-the-clock support.

Advantages of 24-hour care:

Advantages of

24-hour care:

  • Relatives know their loved ones are always well cared for.
  • Those in need of care can continue to live at home in their familiar surroundings.

Disadvantages of 24-hour care:

Disadvantages

of 24-hour care:

  • For comprehensive nursing care activities, qualified nursing staff are needed.
  • If more care is needed and a caregiver is to live in the household, sufficient living space is required.

Respite care

Respite care is a form of substitute care, as it comes into play when the actual caregiver is unavailable for a while, for example due to a planned operation, a vacation or a rehabilitation measure.

Advantages of respite care:

Advantages

of respite care:

  • important opportunity for respite for family caregivers
  • Reliable and loving care provided by competent and empathetic caregivers

Disadvantages of respite care:

Disadvantages

Palliative care and hospice care

Palliative care

and hospice care

Palliative care is dedicated to people in need of care who are terminally ill and therefore require ongoing holistic care, which is not aimed at curing, but at supporting and maintaining the quality of life of the terminally ill as much as possible.

Advantages of palliative and hospice care:

Advantages

of palliative and

hospice care:

  • dignified support in the final phase of life
  • Compassionate end-of-life care, which provides important emotional support for both the sick and their relatives.
  • Outpatient palliative and hospice care is possible

Disadvantages of palliative and hospice care:

Disadvantages:

of palliative and

hospice care:

Conclusion: Which type of care is the right one?

Conclusion: Which

type of care is

the right one?

Which form of care is the right choice in any given case depends not only on the individual’s circumstances, but also on the available services, the costs involved, and the portion covered by long-term care insurance. Providing general guidance is therefore very difficult, especially given the highly individual nature of the decision criteria and their relative importance.
